Select Falcons Gear Up for NCAA Regional Meet

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force track and field team will send 13 of its athletes to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships this weekend (May 26-27). The Falcons will be represented by eight men and five women at the regional in Austin, Texas. The top five finishers from each event will automatically advance to the national championships, while the next three finishers will be available for at-large consideration.
The Midwest Regional, which begins on Friday, May 26, featured multiple programs from Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.
MEN'S COMPETITORS
Sophomore Calvin Glass also qualified in the 800-meter run behind a time of 1:50.47 (NCAA seed time of 1:49.93)...that time was fourth at the Mountain West Conference Championships...currently ranks 15th in the Midwest Region...that time is also the fourth-best in Academy history.
Sophomore Kevin Hawkins earned a place in the regional 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.32 (NCAA seed time of 1:48.78)...finished second at the MWC Championships with that time...currently ranks sixth in the Midwest and 16th in the nation...currently ranked second on the Academy's all-time list.
Junior Nick Luina qualified in the 400-meter dash by clocking a 46.90 to place fourth at the MWC Championships...currently ranked fifth on the Academy's all-time list.
Senior Travis Patterson qualified in the 1500-meter run with his time of 3:50.93 (NCAA seed time of 3:46.37)...used that time to finish seventh at the MWC Championships...currently ranks eighth in the 1500-meter run on the Academy's all-time list
Sophomore Travis Picou qualified in both the 100- (10.46) and 200-meter dashes (20.73), but will only contest the 200-meter dash...currently ranked ninth in the Midwest Region and 21st in the NCAA...placed 7th at the MWC Championships after winning the indoor and outdoor 200-meter dash titles in 2005 and the indoor title earlier this year...advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash at last year's Regional Meet...qualified for 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships in 200-meter dash, where he finished 13th...Academy record-holder in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Junior Matt Schwandt qualified in the javelin throw with a toss of 218'7" at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins last month...currently ranked sixth in Midwest Region with that mark...finished as the MWC runner-up in javelin at last week's championships...ranked second on the Academy's all-time list.
Senior Dan St. Clair qualified in the discus throw with his toss of 177'7" at the Spring Break Classic in late-March...that throw is the third-best ever in Academy history
Junior Marcus Wells also qualified in the javelin throw with his fourth-place throw of 207'6" at the MWC Championships... placed sixth at last year's regional meet, missing advancing to the NCAA finals by just one place...currently ranked sixth in the Academy record book.
WOMEN'S COMPETITORS
Junior Margaret Frash qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase by clocking of 10:48.76 at the Stanford Invitational...placed fifth in that event at the MWC Championships...her personal-best time is 10:48.25, which was set last year...that time is the current Academy record...placed 10th in Midwest Regional one year ago...currently ranks 15th in the region
Junior Caitie Holliday qualified in javelin throw for third straight year with a throw of 142'10" at the Stanford Invitational...her personal-best record of 149'10" ranks fourth on the Academy's all-time list.
Junior Olivia Korte qualified in the discus throw with a season-best distance of 171'10" at the Stanford Invitational...that distance is 11th in the region...was a surprise third- place finisher in discus throw at the 2005 Midwest Regional...her mark from that meet (175'6") remains her career-best and the USAFA school record
Senior Dana Pounds threw a 195'8" in the javelin throw at the MWC Championships, equaling the longest throw ever by an American collegian...that mark broke her own Academy, MWC Championship Meet and MWC All-Time records...won her third consecutive MWC title in the javelin...that throw is the leading mark in the NCAA for 2006...she is the defending NCAA (and Midwest Regional) Champion
Sophomore Kelly Robinson advanced to the regional meet after clocking a 4:26.81 runner-up finish in 1500-meter run at the Drake Relays... that time is currently ranked 12th in the Midwest Region...placed sixth in the 1500-meter run at the MWC Outdoor Championships, after placing second in the mile at the MWC Indoor Championships...currently ranks second on the Academy's all-time list
Junior Dierra Poland also qualified for the regional meet in the 100-meter hurdles, but was forced to withdraw following a quadriceps injury at the MWC Championships.
Pounds and Holliday kick off the weekend with the finals of the javelin throw at 3 p.m., on Friday. The preliminary rounds of the men's 1500- and 800-meter runs, as well as the 400- and 200-meter dashes will also take place on Friday evening.
