INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Junior Olivia Korte and sophomore Kevin Hawkins earned at-large bids into the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the national office announced today (May 30). Korte will be making her second appearance in the discus throw at the NCAA Championships, while sophomore Kevin Hawkins will be making his debut in the national 800-meter run. The duo joins senior Dana Pounds, who looks to defend her national title in the javelin.
Korte finished within the top half of the field at last weekend's Midwestern regionals and enters the national meet ranked 22nd in the country. Her best toss of the season and NCAA-seed (171'10") came on April 1 in Stanford, Calif. Last year at the NCAA Championships, Korte finished 18th.
Like Korte, Hawkins also enters the national championships ranked 22nd in the country. His season-best seed time of 1:48.78 came at the Mountain West Conference Championships, where he finished as the runner-up. That time is currently the second-best in Academy history.
Pounds automatically qualified for the national meet after winning her second straight NCAA Midwest Regional title last weekend with a new meet record toss of 186'10".
The NCAA Championships begin Wednesday (June 7) at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. Pounds and Korte will compete in the qualifying rounds of their respective events that day, while Hawkins will participate in the first round of the 800-meter run.
