Pounds and Korte Advance to Friday' NCAA Finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- By finishing among the top 12 athletes during their respective qualifying rounds, senior Dana Pounds (javelin) and junior Olivia Korte (discus) advanced to the national finals at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, June 7.
Recording a distance of 162'11", Pounds finished fourth in the preliminary round of javelin competition. Korte tied for ninth in the discus after recording a toss of 163'3" on her first attempt of the evening. Finishing fifth in the first flight of competitors, she tied with Arizona State's Sarah Stevens who picked up the fifth-best distance in the second flight.
In addition to the two throwers, the Falcons were also represented on the track by a pair of sophomores. Kevin Hawkins placed 25th in the first round of 800-meter run competition, clocking a time of 1:50.39. Classmate Travis Picou clocked a time of 22.00 to finish 27th in the first round of the 200-meter dash.
Pounds will look to defend her national title on Friday, June 9, during the final round of javelin competition. Later that afternoon, Korte will make her first appearance in the national finals. Action begins with the javelin throw at 1:15 p.m. (PST) at the A.G. Spanos Sports Center in Sacramento, Calif. The discus event is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m.
