SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Olivia Korte claimed the first All-America honors of her career, as Air Force concluded a successful day of competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, June 9. The Seneca, Kan., native picked up a seventh-place finish in the discus throw behind a distance of 171'5".
Despite fouling her first attempt, Korte rebounded with a toss of 162'6". After another foul, she counted a toss of 159'6", but steadily improved her standings behind her final two throws. Korte threw a 168'4", before earning the deciding throw of 171'5" -- a throw that was just one inch shy of the sixth-place spot.
This is the first All-America accolade for the junior, who holds the Academy record in the discus (175'5"), as well as the indoor weight throw and outdoor shot put. Korte, a two-time winner of the track and field program's Outstanding Competitor award, was just shy of her season-best mark of 171'10", which she set at the Stanford Invitational earlier this spring.
She becomes just the second female NCAA All-American for the track and field program since the Academy moved to Division I -- joining classmate Dana Pounds, who picked up her second national title in the javelin earlier this afternoon. Korte's All-American distinction in the discus is the first for the Falcons since Mary Manning finished fourth at the 1984 NCAA Division II national championships. They are the only two discus All-Americans in Academy history (male or female).
During Friday's impressive run, Pounds and Korte combined to total 12 points in the team standings, which was fifth following the five events and seventh at the conclusion of the third day of competition.
