Air Force and Army Battle to 1-1 Tie
8/25/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Army's Bill Watts scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and the Black Knights and Air Force played two scoreless overtime periods Friday night as the two service academies battled to a 1-1 draw in front of a regular-season Cadet Soccer Stadium record of 3,206 fans. It was the season-opening game for both teams.
Watts headed his shot past Falcon goalie Brian Guyette, who had come out of the net to stop the pass, but the ball skidded past Guyette and another Army attacker right to Watts, who found the open net.
Freshman Josh Rhynard scored the first goal of his career for the Falcons in the ninth minute, taking a pass from fellow frosh Steve Noller and firing a rocket from the top of the box past Army goalie John-Michael Gallogly.
Air Force had two outstanding scoring chances as Noller chipped a shot that hit the crossbar in the 40th minute, and senior Duncan McNabb also hit the crossbar with a shot in the fifth minute of the second overtime stanza.
The game was fairly even statistically, as Air Force attempted 15 total shots, compared to 13 for Army and each team had four shots on goal. Guyette and Gallogly each made three saves.
Air Force had a man advantage during the overtime periods after Army's Adrian Moreno was issued a red card with just over one minute remaining in regulation time.
The Falcons hit the road next weekend to play in the University of Portland Nike Invitational. Air Force opens the tournament against Washington on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m. (PT). The Falcons will then face Portland on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 2:30 p.m.
