Air Force Drops Fourth Straight, 3-2, to Evansville

Tom Irvin scored the game-winning goal with just under five minutes remaining as the Evansville men's soccer team defeated Air Force, 3-2, Sunday on the final day of the Quality Inn & Suites/Diadora Tournament. With the victory, Evansville improved to 4-1, while the Falcons lost their fourth straight game and are 0-4-1 this season.
Irvin scored his first goal of the season with 4:55 left in the second half to break a 2-all tie. Irvin took a pass from Ian McAuley and beat Falcons goalkeeper Paul Elsbernd from 10 yards out. Elsbernd, who replaced Air Force starter Brian Guyette at halftime, registered three saves and allowed just the one goal, but suffered his first loss of the season.
Evansville got on the board first seven minutes in when Cory Elenio scored an unassisted goal, beating Guyette for his fourth tally of the campaign. Jarrett Neff gave the Purple Aces a 2-0 lead with a penalty kick in the 41st minute.
Air Force sophomore Jason Dall cut the lead in half with the first goal of his career in the 48th minute. Dall took a pass from junior Andy Nigro off a corner kick and placed a five-yard shot past Evansville goalie Alec Dufty. Nigro notched his second assist of the game less than three minutes later as junior Ian Hauck headed in a corner kick to tie the game at 2-all.
The Purple Aces outshot the Falcons 19-11 overall and 8-6 in shots on goal. Dufty recorded four saves for Evansville, while Guyette made two saves before leaving the game.
Evansville and Missouri State tied for top honors at the tournament with each team going 2-0. Air Force and Central Arkansas each went 0-2. Nigro and sophomore Brett Selzer were named to the all-tournament team.
Air Force returns home for a pair of games next weekend. The Falcons will host Memphis on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., then Alabama A&M on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12:00 p.m.
