USAFA, Colo. - The 18th-ranked Air Force water polo improved to 3-0 this weekend at the East Meets West Tournament, defeating No. 20 Brown, 11-5. With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-4 overall, while the Bears fall to 3-2.
Air Force never trailed in the game, getting its first score from junior Justin Berry (Windermere, Fla.) with 5:37 to play in the first period. While Brown responded less than 30 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1, Berry followed with another goal after just 15 seconds. The opening period ended with the Falcons up 2-1 before the Bears were able to tie the score once more to start the second quarter. However, a goal by freshman Alex Churnside (Orange, Calif.) gave Air Force the lead for good, while Kevin Williams (So., River Forest, Ill.) added a score to put the Falcons up 4-2 at the half.
Within the first minute of the third period, the Bears' Grant LeBeau got on the board to bring his team within one goal. However, the Falcons closed out the quarter on a 4-1 run, capped off by a floater by Joey Brewer (So., Clovis, Calif.) at the buzzer, to take the 8-4 advantage.
Air Force increased its margin to 9-4 with a man-up goal by Churnside, but Brown had one more answer, getting a second goal from Hank Weintraub. However, the Falcons closed the game with two goals in the final two minutes to take the 11-5 victory.
Berry led the Falcons with three goals, while Churnside and Williams added two goals each. Also scoring for Air Force in the contest were Brewer, seniors Kyle Schafer (Irvine, Calif.) and Matt LeBlanc (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Miles McMullan (So., Irvine, Calif.).
The Falcons conclude the East Meets West Tournament this afternoon, when they take on 19th-ranked Cal Baptist at 3:00.
