Air Force Hosts Falcon Invitational To Open 2006 Season
9/6/2006 12:00:00 AM | Golf
The Air Force golf team opens the 2006 fall season this weekend, Sept. 9-10, by hosting the 38th-annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, held at the 7,301-yard, par 72 Eisenhower Golf Course (Blue). The 54-hole tournament is slated to begin with two rounds on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m., while the final round will begin Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
Scouting the Falcons...
Eight Air Force golfers from the 2005-06 season return to the team this year, accompanied by six newcomers. Leading the veterans are seniors Chad Follett and Tyler Goulding. Follett lends valuable experience to the Falcons, while Goulding, one of the most accomplished golfers in school history, looks to cap off a successful career for Air Force.
Other returners include juniors Tyler Labrum, one of the team's top performers last season, Jared Freeman and Bob Whitney, and sophomores Shaun O'Bryant and Andrew Gibson.
Head Coach George Koury...
Air Force head coach George Koury enters his fifth season at the helm of the Falcons' golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.
In his first four seasons as head coach, Koury, a 1993 Academy graduate and former team captain and MVP, has helped the Falcons continue their dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic. Air Force has now won the Reemtsma Trophy, given to the winner of the SAGC, for 11 straight seasons. In addition, Koury helped lead Air Force to the team title at last fall's Falcon Invitational, marking the first time since the inaugural event in 1969 that the team won its own tournament outright.
The Field...
Nineteen teams are slated to compete in this year's invitational. The full list follows: Air Force, Air Force JV, California, Colorado State, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico (B), Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, UCCS, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Utah Valley State, Weber State, Wyoming, and Xavier.
Last Year at the Falcon Invitational...
Despite strong final round performances by some of its competitors, the Air Force golf team was able to hang on for the victory at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. The Falcons, who finished 4-over-par for the weekend at 868, finished four strokes ahead of second-place Weber State (872), while Boise State's Graham Delaet brought home medalist honors, finishing at a 10-under-par 206.
Air Force's win in its own tournament was just its third ever, the first since the Falcons tied the New Mexico JV squad for the win in 2001. In addition, it marked the team's first outright title in the tournament since the inaugural event was held in 1969. That year, Air Force captured the team trophy after playing just 18 holes of golf due to inclement weather.
Leading the way for the Falcons in their victory was junior Tyler Goulding, who finished tied for third at 3-under-par.
Up Next...
Next on the schedule for the Falcons is the William H. Tucker Invitational Sept. 22-23, hosted by MWC opponent New Mexico.
