USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Picking up six victories, the Air track and field team opened the 2007 season hosting the annual All-Comers Meet at the Academy on Saturday, Jan. 13. The Falcons collected 30 top-five finishes, highlighted by eight events that included at least two Falcons within the top five.
With a shot put distance of 44'0½", freshman Sara Neubauer guided an Air Force sweep of the top three spots in that event, while classmate Melissa Beerse did the same in the pole vault, clearing a mark of 11'5¾". Fellow frosh Danielle McCarty led a one-two Falcons' punch in the triple jump with a 36'10½".
Junior Travis Picou won the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 21.74, senior Dierra Poland took first in the 60-meter hurdles behind a time of 9.00. In addition, the men's 4x400-yard relay team took first with a time of 3:26.32, as its final runner edged out his opponent.

Freshman Megan Miller took second in the pole vault with a height of 10'11¾", while sophomore Michelle Fryling cleared 10'6" to finish third. Using one member from each class, Air Force took four of the top five spots in the men's mile. Sophomore Parker Cowles was the event's runner-up with a time of 4:39.34, while freshman Arthur Grijalva took third in 4:47.89. Sophomore Justin Mason (4:50.23) and junior Kevin Hawkins (4:50.23) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Falcons earned multiple top-five finishes in three other events, as well. In addition to Picou's winning time, junior Troy Jensen earned a fifth-place time of 22.62 in the 200-meter dash during his first meet with the program since embarking a mission two years ago. Freshman Nick Frawley was the top collegiate finisher (third overall) in the pole vault with a height of 15'7", while junior Erik Mirandette, who is also returning to the program following a mission-related absence, placed fourth after successfully clearing 14'7¼". Sophomore newcomer Kellen Curry completed the 60-meter hurdles in 8.38 to finish second, while junior John Payne clocked in at 8.57 to take fifth.
Freshman Andy Schweitzer placed second in the 800-meter run by crossing the finish line in 2:03.12, while Korte earned the same position in the weight throw with a toss of 51'8¼". Classmate David Lissy threw a fourth-place distance of 47'1¾" in the shot put, while sophomore Kirk Devine placed fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 53'4¼".
Although it was the start of the indoor season, due to the extreme cold outside and heating issues throughout the Academy, the temperatures within the Cadet Field House might have rivaled that of an outdoor meet.
The Air Force pole vaulters head to Reno, Nev., for the annual prestigious USATF Pole Vault Summit on Jan. 19-20. The rest of the squad will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the MWC-Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 20.
