Falcons Down DU For 1st MPSF Win
The Air Force Falcons captured their first MPSF victory of the season Saturday with a 2-1 win over Denver at Pioneer Field. Senior Andy Nigro and freshman Kyle Moses each scored a goal and added an assist. Senior goalie Brian Guyette made a career-high 15 saves. The victory snapped a six-game winless streak for the Falcons and gave first-year head coach Doug Hill his initital conference triumph.
Moses Scores First Career Goal
Freshman Kyle Moses scored the first goal of his career last Saturday against Denver and it turned out to be the game-winner. Moses, who had already assistsed on a goal by Andy Nigro in the ninth minute, placed a shot into the net in the 43rd minute to give Air Force a 2-1 lead for good. The three points were Moses' first of the season and he is tied for third on the team with three points.
Back Home, Finally
Air Force returns home this weekend to play at Cadet Soccer Stadium for the first time in six weeks. The Falcons will host San Jose State on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., then Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. The Falcons, who last played at home on Sept. 9, went 1-5-1 on their seven-game stretch away from home. Air Force is tied for fourth in the conference with a 1-2 MPSF record.
Guyette Ties National-Best 15 Saves
Senior goalie Brian Guyette made a career-high 15 saves in the Falcons' 2-1 victory Saturday. His previous career-best was 12 saves earlier this season against Marist. His 15 saves ties the national-high in NCAA Division I play this season. Guyette continues to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation by averaging 5.64 saves per game and is third with a 1.25 GAA.
Nigro Named MPSF Player of the Week
Air Force senior forward Andy Nigro was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Brine Player of the Week after scoring a goal and adding an assist in the Falcons' 2-1 win at Denver on Saturday. Nigro registered his first three points of the season by putting away a ninth-minute goal and dishing out a 43rd minute game-winning assist. The Falcons snapped a six-game winless streak in the process, while picking up their first conference win. Nigro, who is third on the team with 18 total shots, joins senior goalie Brian Guyette as the two Falcons to earn player of the week honors in 2007.

Air Force 2, Denver 1 Senior Andy Nigro and freshman Kyle Moses each posted a goal and an assist and senior Brian Guyette recorded a career-high 15 saves Saturday to lead the Air Force men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Denver at Pioneer Field. With the victory, Air Force snapped a six-game winless streak and improved to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while DU fell to 5-4-1 and 1-1-1.
Air Force (3-7-1, 1-2-0) got on the scoreboard first when Moses hit Nigro for a one-timer past DU goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft at the 8:36 mark. It was Nigro's first goal of the season. The Pioneers tied it up less than four minutes later, when Kellen Christensen chipped the ball over Guyette and into the goal in the 12th minute.
Moses notched his first career goal, and the game-winner, at the 42:28 mark after taking a pass from Nigro and placing a shot into the lower right corner past Bredehoft.
Guyette, who leads the MPSF in saves per game, kept the Pioneers at bay in the second half, making eight of his 15 saves in the second stanza. Denver outshot Air Force, 37-11, including 21-4 in the second half.
"We had to fight for this victory," said Air Force head coach Doug Hill. "Kyle Moses played really well today for us."
