Blake Nunes and Brandon Baggett scored second half goals Sunday to lead the Sacramento State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. The game was played at Colorado College in downtown Colorado Springs after a snowstorm hit the Academy early Sunday morning. With the loss, its seventh by one goal this season, Air Force fell to 3-9-1 and 1-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Hornets improved to 3-9-2 and 2-2-1 in league play.
With cloudy skies and the temperatures not getting out of the 30s, neither team could muster a shot on goal in the first half. In fact, there were only five total shots in the first 45 minutes, with Air Force attempting three and Sacramento State recording two.
Nunes put the Hornets up 1-0 in the 57th minute after taking a pass from Emmanuel Ochoa and chipping a shot from 10 yards out over the outstretched arms of Air Force goalie Brian Guyette.
The Falcons tied up the score when senior Andy Nigro converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. The Falcons were awarded the PK when sophomore Josh Rhynard was taken down in the box by Hornet keeper Ryan Kenny. Nigro then put away his second goal of the season.
The Hornets scored the game-winner in the 67th minute when Bagget, who entered the game earlier in the second half, took a crossing pass from Fernando Cabades and struck a header past Guyette.
Air Force held a 12-8 advantage in total shots and each team had four shots on goal. Kenny made three saves for the Hornets, while Guyette had two for Air Force.
The Falcons are idle next week and return to action on Friday, Nov. 2 at San Jose State.
