The Air Force men's soccer team defeated San Jose State, 3-2, in overtime Friday night at Spartan Stadium thanks to an own goal by the Spartans less than three minutes into the extra frame. Sophomore Josh Rhynard received credit for the goal after an SJSU defender knocked a crossing pass into his own net past Spartan goalie Richard Mann.
With the victory, which snapped a four-game winless streak in overtime games for the Falcons, Air Force improved to 4-9-1 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Spartans fell to 8-7 and 3-3.
Rhynard, who has two goals this season, assisted on a goal by senior Chris Mathews in the 63rd minute to tie the game at 2-all and set up the overtime situation. Rhynard took two shots from point-blank range that Mann saved before Mathews knocked the ball into the net for his first tally of the campaign.
After a scoreless first half, the goals came quickly, starting in the 51st minute when SJSU's Ismael Ibarra headed a pass from Gavin Wenyon past Falcon goalie Brian Guyette for a 1-0 lead. Air Force senior Ian Hauck tied the game in the 53rd minute flicked a shot past Mann off a corner kick. Sophomore Kevin Rosser was credited with the assist.
The Spartans took the lead again in the 55th minute when Sam Shore took a shot from 15 yards that eluded Guyette, who had deflected a pass right to Shore. Guyette, the MPSF's leader in saves per game, finished with 12 saves, while Mann had four for SJSU. The Spartans outshot Air Force, 20-14 in total shots and 14-8 in shots on goal.
The Falcons continue their road trip on Sunday, Nov. 4 against Sacramento State, beginning at 1 p.m. (PT).
