Falcons Go 0-1-1 at Alabama A&M
The Air Force Falcons played a couple of close games last weekend in Huntsville, Ala., at the Alabama A&M Tournament. The Falcons lost their first game, 1-0, to Central Arkansas, then tied host Alabama A&M, 1-1 on Sunday.
Air Force dominated play against Central Arkansas, putting 11 shots on goal, compared to two for the Bears. Against the Bulldogs on Sunday, freshman Kyle Schafer tied the game in the 74th minute and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Schafer Takes Over Scoring Lead
With his goal against Alabama A&M, Kyle Schafer took over AFA's scoring lead this season with five points on two goals and one assist. He also scored in the team's 1-0 win over St. Francis. Schafer has been very efficient this season, scoring his two goals on six shots on net. Ian Hauck is second on the team with four points (2g).
Open MPSF Play This Weekend
Air Force continues on the road to open play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this weekend. The Falcons will play UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m., then head to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
The two games are the fifth and sixth of seven consecutive matches away from Cadet Soccer Stadium. The next home game for Air Force is on Friday, Oct. 19
Guyette Up There in League Stats
Senior goalie Brian Guyette continues to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation by averaging 4.88 saves per game. He is also third in the conference in goals-against average at 0.93.
Kyle Schafer is 14th in the MPSF in scoring, averaging 0.63 ppg, and is the fourth top scoring freshman in the league.
Central Arkansas 1, Air Force 0
The Air Force men's soccer team posted 11 shots on goal but dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday to Central Arkansas at Normal, Ala. The loss is the Falcons' third consecutive one-goal defeat as they fall to 2-5 this season. With the victory, Central Arkansas improved to 3-6.
UCA notched the game's only goal in the 55th minute when Jimmy Nummy placed a shot by Falcon goalie Brian Guyette. The assist was credited to Randy Randolph. It was one of only two shots on goal for the Bears as the Air Force defense once again played a solid game.
Air Force, meanwhile, totaled 11 shots on goal, all of which were saved by UCA goalie Tyler Beckerle. Senior Chris Mathews had a game-high three, while senior Andy Nigro, sophomore Kevin Rosser and freshman Kyle Moses, who had his first career start, each had two. Air Force held an 18-7 advantage in total shots and had six corner kicks to UCA's one.
Air Force 1, Alabama A&M 1 (2ot)
The Air Force men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with a 1-1 tie against Alabama A&M in the fourth game of the Alabama A&M Invitational at Normal, Ala.
Freshman Kyle Schafer scored his second goal of the season in the 74th minute to tie the game and neither team scored in two 10-minute overtime periods as the Falcons moved their record to 2-5-1 this season. Alabama A&M is 4-5-1 this season.
The Bulldogs struck first when MfanaFuthi Bhembe beat AFA goalie Brian Guyette from 10 yards out in the 50th minute. Schafer, who now holds the team lead with five points, evened the game when he took a pass from sophomore Aaron Eshkenasi and beat AAMU goalie Paul Musoke. Senior Chris Mathews started the play with a corner kick and was also awarded an assist on the play.
The Falcon defense allowed just one goal for the third straight game, and has given up just five in the past four games but the Falcons are 0-3-1 in those games.
