Falcons Fall to DU, 1-0
The Air Force Falcons lost their ninth game by one goal this season by dropping a 1-0 decision to the University of Denver last Saturday at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Six of the team's one-goal defeats, including the last two, have been by a 1-0 score.
Final Weekend Coming Up
Air Force plays its final games of the 2007 season this weekend at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons host nationally ranked New Mexico on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., then UNLV on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m., in the season finale.
The senior class will be honored in a pre-game ceremony on Sunday. The Class of 2008 includes Brian Guyette, Andy Nigro, Jason Belvill, Ian Hauck, Steven Locker and Chris Mathews.
The Falcons are 4-11-1 overall and 2-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Guyette Still Tops in Saves
Senior goalie Brian Guyette continues to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation by averaging 5.69 saves per game. He made three saves last Saturday against Denver. Guyette is also tied for third in the MPSF with a 1.42 GAA.
Mathews, meanwhile, is tied for 10th in the conference with 0.19 assists per game. He leads the team with three helpers this season.
A Look Back
The Falcons are looking to avenge a pair of losses earlier this season to New Mexico and UNLV. UNLV downed the Falcons, 2-1, in double overtime on Oct. 5, while the Lobos handed Air Force its worst defeat of the season, 6-0, in Albuquerque on Oct. 7.
Two Named Academic All-District
Two Air Force players have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 men's soccer team. Seniors Jason Belvill and Chris Mathews will now go on the ballot for Academic All-America honors. This is the second all-district selection for Belvill and the first for Mathews.
Belvill, a defender from Seattle, Wash., has started all 16 games this season for the Falcons. He is leading a defense that has allowed just 1.6 goals per game in 2007. He has two assists in his career, both of them coming as a sophomore against Florida Atlantic and Missouri State.
Belvill has been a member of the dean's list every semester and is ranked in the top 12 percent of the senior class. He currently has a 3.52 GPA in engineering mechanics.
Mathews, a midfielder from Euless, Texas, has also started all 16 games this season and currently leads the team with three assists, which is tied for 10th in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. He has two goals and four assists in his career.
Academically, he has been on the dean's list every semester but one at the Academy and is in the top 30 percent of the senior class. Mathews carries a 3.24 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in operations research.
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
Last Weekend's Recap
Denver 1, Air Force 0
The University of Denver men's soccer team made an early goal by Kyle Christensen hold up as the Pioneers defeated Air Force, 1-0, Saturday at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, DU improved to 9-4-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and moved back into first place, while the Falcons fell to 4-11-1 and 2-6 in league play.
Kyle Christensen combined with his brother, Kellen, on a beautiful give-and-go less than five minutes into the game for the game's only goal. Kyle started the play at the top of the box with a pass to Kellen, who slid a pass back to Kyle and he fired a shot from 16 yards past Air Force goalie Brian Guyette at the 4:30 mark.
Kellen Christensen had a chance to put the Pioneers up 2-0 midway through the first half but rocketed a shot off the crossbar. Shots on goal were at a premium as each team had just four apiece. Denver did outshoot the Falcons, 18-8, in total shots and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Kevin Rosser led Air Force with two shots on goal, but the Denver defense didn't let the Falcon offense do much after taking the early lead. Junior Jason Dall and sophomore Josh Rhynard each had a shot on goal for Air Force.
Matt Bredehoft made four saves for Denver, while Guyette made three.
