USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With 11 hard-fought bouts, the Air Force boxing team wrapped up another exciting round of Friday Night Fights on Nov. 30 in the Academy's Upper Boxing Room. Junior Nathan Liptak claimed his second Boxer of the Week honor of the season following a referee-stopped-contest in a 156-pound contest.
"All of the boxers fought extremely hard and came out gunning from the opening bell," the coaching staff of Eddie Weichers and Capt Erwin Vargas said. "Veteran boxers were put to the test by younger challengers, who were hungry to upset the more experienced boxers. Many competitors were able to gut out narrow victories through sheer determination and willpower."
Senior Chris Johnson opened the night with a decision over junior Elon Brumfield in a 185-pound bout. Senior Bruce Jamison followed with a 182-pound decision over junior Andrew Catoire.
Junior Nathan Liptak picked up the first referee-shortened bout of the night, as he dispatched Michael Dunn in the third round. Using effective aggression, Liptak countered his opponent's punches and landed hard multiple punch combinations to the head and body. Liptak was also named Boxer of the Week following the Falcons' first intrasquad meet.
Junior Harvey White decisioned classmate David Simon in a 132-pound bout, while senior James Dunn earned the judges' vote over junior Justin Lee at 173 pounds.
Senior Mike Tolzien made his first Friday Night Fights appearance of the year as he decisioned rookie Palmer Roux in a 168-pound bout. Freshman Allan Cameron earned a victory-by-decision over classmate Ricky Rodriguez in the first 170-pound for both competitors. In his boxing debut, junior Richard Kenny claimed a decisional win over freshman William Lindberg in a 196-pound bout.
Three of the final five bouts were halted by the referee prior to the final bell. Sophomore Bailey Ball defeated freshman Gavin Foley in the third round of a 147-pund contest, while freshman Joseph Silvio took a 164-pound bout from classmate Christopher de la Torre in the third round. Fellow freshman Matt Tasin won the 175-pound contest over classmate Will Remington when the referee stopped their bout in the second.
The Falcons close out the fall semester on Dec. 7, as they host another round of Friday Night Fights. Action will begin at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gymnasium.
