McFarland and Romanko Improve All-Time Standing at Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. - Highlighted by two incursions into the Academy record book, several members of the Air Force track team completed competition at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, Feb. 10. Freshman Ally Romanko and junior Ian McFarland each advanced up the program's all-time standings in their respective events.

Romanko, who had been ranked ninth on the Academy's all-time list in the 800-meter run, quickly improved to fifth in the standings with a career-best time of 2:13.65. Romanko finished second in the third heat of competitors. McFarland clocked a time of 8:12.41 to take fifth in the second section of the 3000-meter races. That time is eighth on the programs' all-time list.

Three other Falcons competed in various heats of the 3000-meter run. Sophomore Parker Cowles won the fifth heat with a time of 8:36.69, while senior Jason Beck placed 19th (8:39.73) in the third section. Sophomore Matt Williams placed 22nd in the second heat, with a time of 8:33.83.

The 5000-meter run also had a quartet of Falcons in competition. Sophomore Joe Curran clocked a time of 14:43.43 to take 13th in the third section, while classmate Sean Houseworth finished 15th in 14:46.51. Competing in the fourth section, juniors Josh van Wyngaarden and Kenny Grosselin finished third (14:54.59) and ninth (15:10.56), respectively.

Sophomore Sebastian Ortiz crossed the finish line in 4:15.22 to take third in the seventh section of the mile, while senior Richard Elmore clocked 4:20.33 to take ninth in the fifth section.

Junior Kevin Hawkins placed third in his section of the 800-meter run behind a time of 1:52.08, while classmate Kelly Robinson took 12th in the mile with a time of 4:59.63. Freshman Brittany Morreale rounded out the Air Force competitors with a 15th-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:36.74.

Air Force returns to action next weekend, when it travels to Laramie, Wyo., for the Robert Shine Invitational. The meet, which is the Falcons' final tune-up before the Mountain West Conference Championships, will be held on Friday, Feb. 16.
