Freshman John Doeseckle quickly dispatched of classmate Matt Bottorff in the first of two 156-pound bouts. Doeseckle's hard-hitting quickly led to three standing-eight-counts before the referee stopping the contest with time remaining in the first round.
Three bouts at the 165-pound weight class highlighted the middle of the show. Freshman Quinton Croff held off classmate Joel Holley to take the unanimous decision from the three judges, while sophomore Hyongdong Kim picked up an undisputed decision from junior Aubrey Aldridge. In the final bout at that weight class, freshman Robert Steigerwald used an exceptionally strong third round to unanimously decision classmate Ian Lee.
Junior Daryn Nelson closed out the event with the second 156-pound contest. Nelson kept his opponent, freshman Frederick Diederich, against the ropes for much of the third round, en route to the unanimous decision. With the victory, Nelson remains undefeated on the season, with a perfect 7-0 mark.
For his efforts, Nelson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Using sharp combinations to the head and body, Nelson wore down his opponent. By the third round, Nelson picked up the pace and pressured Diederich.
Wing Open action continues next Thursday (Feb. 15) with 13 quarterfinal bouts. The competition begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
