The Wing Open Outstanding Boxer Award is named in memory of former Air Force Academy Athletic Director Col John J. Clune, who coined the phrase "Warriors and Winners." He loved his job, his cadets and his athletic teams. Clune impacted many lives and exemplified the greatest devotion and loyalty for everyone around him. His vitality, sense of humor and respect for individual dignity made him a giant among his peers. His competitive spirit could criticize while his compassionate heart would hug you in the same breath. Clune understood what it took to succeed and be a winner. He will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched. His presence is felt at every Falcon contest and the Most Outstanding Boxer award is dedicated in his memory.
