ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO: The heptathlon is the first event of the two-day national meet. Action begins a 9:00 a.m. (CST) on Friday, March 9, with the 60-meter dash. The long jump, shot put and high jump will also take place that day. The final three events - 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run) will take place on Saturday (March 10) beginning at 11 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: This will be the second straight year that Brian Walsh has competed at the national championships. Last season, Walsh picked up a 13th-place finish in the heptathlon, backed by a total of 5288 points. His best finish of the weekend was a third-place time in the 1000-meter run. In addition, he picked up three additional top-10 finishes in the heptathlon. Walsh finished sixth in the pole vault, eighth in the 60-meter dash and ninth in the long jump.
HAWKIN' UP SPACE: Junior Kevin Hawkins clocked a time of 1:49.54 at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet to move into third on the Academy's all-time list. An Academy Junior Class record, it is the fastest time in the Mountain West Conference this season and the fourth-fastest time ever in the conference.
SO CLOSE: Junior Travis Picou just missed out on his second trip to the national meet by one one-hundredth of a second.
CAN WE GET A REWRITE?: Five pages of the 2007 Air Force track and field media guide are already out-of-date. During the indoor season, five Academy records, 10 Class records and 27 all-time list incursions have been recorded.
