Louisville, Ky. - Giving up seven unanswered goals in the first half, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 16-10 contest to Bellarmine Sunday afternoon. The Falcons fall to 2-7 on the season, 1-2 in the Great Western Lacrosse League, while the Knights move to 3-9 overall, 1-3 in the GWLL.
While the Falcons never led in the game, the score was tied 2-2 in the opening six minutes of the contest. After two more Bellarmine scores in the first period, junior Kevin Crumrine (Edgewater, Md.) brought Air Force back within one point at 4-3. However, starting with a goal with just four seconds remaining in the first period, Bellarmine closed out the opening half on a 7-0 run.
Air Force scored the first three goals of the third period to get back within five goals, but could not get any closer the rest of the way. The Knights outscored the Falcons 5-4 down the stretch to cruise to the 16-10 victory.
The Falcons outshot Bellarmine 50-39 for the game, including 31-11 in the second half alone, but could not overcome solid play by the Knights' goalkeeper, J.C. Hutchens, who tallied 14 second-half saves. Air Force was also unable to take advantage of its man-up opportunities, going 2-of-9 on the EMO for the day.
Sophomore Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) was the Falcons' leading scorer, finishing with four goals, while senior Justin Kuchta (Ridgefield, Conn.) added three goals. Also scoring for Air Force were Crumrine, Michael Weber (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) and David Rose (Jr., Allentown, Pa.). Meanwhile, John Kirk and Dylan McDougal led the Knights with three goals each.
The Falcons wrap up their home schedule on Friday, when they host Ohio State in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
