Falcon Lacrosse Secures ASUN Tournament Berth with 17-9 Win Over Mercer

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force secured its fifth-straight ASUN Tournament berth in as many seasons with the league following the 17-9 win against Mercer, Saturday afternoon at Falcons Stadium. The Falcons, now on a three-game win streak, improved to 5-7 with a 3-1 mark in the conference.
C1C Caelan Driggs made program history with his two goals, becoming the program's all-time goals leader with 128 career goals to his credit. Driggs takes the torch from lacrosse great Mike Crampton (2011-14). Driggs now has 156 career points, tying former teammate Josh Yago for sixth most in program history.
Driggs was 1-of-10 goal scorers on the game. Freshman standout Christian Schweiger led the team with three goals, notching his sixth hat trick of the season. Driggs and Schweiger combined for 17 shots while the team made 49 shot attempts on the game.
The Falcons had their best quarter of the season in the third quarter, scoring nine goals while holding Mercer to just one, marking a season-best eight goal differential for one quarter. Mercer was only able to attempt two shots on goal in the third.
Seniors Nathan Crouse, Cole Cunningham, Luke Vrsansky, and Hunter Panzik combined for five goals in their senior finale at Falcon stadium— Crouse being credited with two goals. Jake Mason, Alex Rismani, Lee Krotee, and Michael Frieri scored a pair of goals each. Ben Heidt rounded out the scoring with one goal.
Frieri had an exceptional day, winning 11 face offs in 18 attempts for a career best showing at center X. He scored two goals off face off wins and picked up seven ground balls, tying ground ball leader Cole Cunningham who picked up seven ground balls in conjunction with a pair of caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Charlie Pyfer also caused a pair of turnovers and picked up five ground balls in the effort.
Senior goalie Nolan Parlette improved to 2-0 in goal this season, making eight saves in 60 minutes of action.
Mercer's Dylan McKelvy, responsible for Air Force trailing in the first quarter, led the Bears with three goals. Teammate Christopher Cappelmann picked up a game high 10 ground balls.
At the conclusion of this week's games, the ASUN Tournament field has been decided. Utah, Jacksonville, Air Force and Mercer will play in the post-season tournament.
The Falcons travel to Salt Lake City to take on the conference front-running Utes in the regular season finale, April 25. Action at Ute Field is slated for noon MT. Utah won last season's finale in overtime, 16-15, at USAFA. Air Force had the final say, besting Utah in the ASUN Championship game, 11-10, to earn the automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
