Brian Walsh Leads Decathlon after First Day of Action

Walsh took the early lead in the first event, as he won the 100-meter dash in 10.84 to top the field by over 100 points. He went on to take second in the long jump (22'0¼"), before claiming a fourth-place shot put mark of 40'4¼". After holding the top overall spot during the first three events, Walsh narrowly slipped to second in the overall standings following a second-place finish in the high jump (5'4¾"), but quickly rebounded to regain the top spot in the day's final event. Clocking a time of 49.52, Walsh won the 400-meter dash as one of just two competitors to clear the 51-second mark.
Sophomore Skylar Morgan closed out the first five events with 3,299 points and a sixth-place standing. Morgan's best finish of the day was a third-place tie in the high jump, as he cleared 6'2¼". Morgan also accounted for a fourth-place long jump distance of 35'10", a fifth-place distance of 35'10" in the shot put, a sixth-place time of 52.14 in the 400-meter dash and a seventh-place time of 11.73 in the 100-meter dash.
With 3,238 points, junior Matt Gensic is in seventh-place following the first half of competition. In addition to tying with Morgan for third in the high jump (6'2¼"), he placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.67. Gensic also picked up a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (11.63) and shot put (34'8¼"). And finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 19'5¼".
Freshman Danielle McCarty is currently in 10th-place (2643 points) following the first four events of the heptathlon. She opened the day with a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.73), before tying for fourth in the high jump (5'3¼"). She added an 11th-place mark in the shot put (28'1¾") and closed out the day with 10th-place time of 27.01 in the 200-meter dash.
Multi-event action concludes tomorrow (May 10) with the final half of events for the heptathlon and decathlon. Walsh, Morgan and Gensic kick things off at 12:00 p.m., while McCarty's events get underway at 12:30 p.m.
