For the first time since 1993, the Air Force men's soccer team will face both Army and Navy in the same season, according to the Falcons' 2007 schedule released today by head coach Doug Hill. The regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 31 against Maryland-Baltimore County in Annapolis, Md.
"We have a good schedule this fall and are excited to play both our service-academy rivals," said Hill, who will enter his first season as head coach this fall after spending 13 years as an assistant at Air Force. "We hope to continue scheduling Army and Navy in the future."
Following the UMBC game, the Falcons will take on Navy on Sunday, Sept. 2. After home games against Birmingham-Southern (Sept. 7) and St. Francis College (Sept. 9), Air Force will travel to West Point for games against Marist on Friday, Sept. 14 and Army on Sunday, Sept. 16.
A weekend in Normal, Ala., follows as AFA will face Central Arkansas (Sept. 29) and Alabama A&M (Sept. 30) to wrap up its non-conference schedule.
The Falcons open the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation slate with three consecutive road games beginning on Friday, Oct. 5 at UNLV. On Saturday, Nov. 10, in-state rival Denver comes to the Academy, while defending MPSF champion New Mexico visits on Friday, Nov. 16.
"As always, our toughest competition will come from our MPSF opponents," Hill said. "We always have great games against those teams and I expect the same this season."
The MPSF will once again employ a home-and-home schedule with all six teams this season. The regular-season champion will receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Division I Tournament, which begins on Friday, Nov. 23.
Air Force, which finished 5-12-1 overall and 4-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation last season, finished tied for fourth in the league and returns nine starters from the 2006 team.
