Falcons Sweep Two Home Games
The Air Force Falcons opened the home portion of their 2007 season last weekend with a pair of wins at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Air Force, under the leadership of first-year head coach Doug Hill, defeated Birmingham-Southern, 2-0, and St. Francis, 1-0.
Senior Ian Hauck and junior Jason Dall each posted his first goal of the season against BSC. Senior Brian Guyette needed to make just one save for his seventh career shutout.
The Falcons evened their record at 2-2 when freshman Kyle Schafer notched his first career goal in AFA's victory over St. Francis.
Schafer Nets First Career Goal
Freshman Kyle Schafer, who posted his first career point with an assist against UMBC, scored his first career goal in the Falcons' 1-0 victory over St. Francis. Schafer is tied with sophomore Josh Rhynard for the team lead with three points (1g, 1a).
Army Tournament This Weekend
Air Force travels to West Point, N.Y., this weekend to play in the BAE Systems Army Fall Classic. The Falcons will face Marist College (0-2-1) on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. (ET), then battle Army (4-0) on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 12 p.m. (ET).
These two games are the first of seven consecutive matches away from Cadet Soccer Stadium. The next home game for Air Force is on Friday, Oct. 19.
Guyette Named Player of the Week
Senior goalie Brian Guyette posted two shutouts last weekend, giving him eight for his career. Guyette made one save against BSC and two against St. Francis. He currently has a scoreless streak of 218 minutes and 16 seconds, dating back to early in the game against Navy on Sept. 2.
For his efforts, Guyette was named this week's MPSF Brine Player of the Week. He is No. 2 in the conference with a 0.75 goals-against average.
Last Weekend's Recaps
Air Force 2, Birmingham-Southern 1
The Air Force men's soccer team gave head coach Doug Hill his first career victory Friday night by defeating Birmingham-Southern, 2-0, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Hill, who was hired in June, was an assistant at Air Force for 13 seasons prior to his promotion.
The Falcons struck in the 15th minute when Ian Hauck put home a shot from about six yards after BSU goalie Joe Nasco saved a shot by Falcon Josh Rhynard. Rhynard broke free behind the Panther defense and took a shot from about 18 yards that Nasco got a hand on, but deflected it to an attacking Hauck in front of the net.
On the play, Nasco suffered an apparent shoulder injury after diving for Hauck's shot and hitting the ground. He laid on the field for approximately 20 minutes before he was transported off the field in an ambulance.
John Halbert replaced Nasco and gave up Air Force's second goal in the 22nd minute when junior Jason Dall took a corner kick from Chris Mathews and placed a shot just under the crossbar past Halbert.
The Falcon defense took over from there, allowing BSC just six total shots and only one shot on goal. Senior goalie Brian Guyette posted the seventh shutout of his career in gaining his first victory of the season.
Air Force 1, St. Francis 0
Freshman Kyle Schafer scored the first goal of his career and Air Force posted its second consecutive shutout Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over St. Francis University in men's soccer action at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Air Force improved to 2-2 this season, while St. Francis fell to 1-3.
Schafer's goal came with just eight seconds remaining in the first half. The Colorado Springs, Colo., product took a long crossing pass from sophomore Kevin Rosser and put an eight-yard shot through the legs of SFU goalie Brad Williams. It was AFA's only shot on goal of the game and Rosser's first point of his career.
St. Francis' best opportunity of the game came with 33rd minute when Jarron Brooks broke free down the right side and placed a shot from 10 yards past AFA keeper Brian Guyette, but junior defender Jason Dall was on the goal line and kicked it away. The Red Flash had three shots on goal but was outshot, 9-8, in total shots by the Falcons.
Guyette made two saves in posting his second consecutive shutout and has a scoreless streak of 218 minutes and 16 seconds. Williams did not make a save for SFU.
