Air Force Falls to Davidson at GWU Tournament

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game match to Davidson during early Saturday (Sept. 8) action at the Runnin' Bulldog Tournament, hosted by Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Falcons, who allowed the Wildcats to hit.286, fell in straight 30-15, 30-27, 30-19 sets.
Freshman Nichole Stilwell put the Falcons on the board with a kill in the first set. Junior Kristina Stewart added a service ace, but Davidson pulled out to a 10-4 lead. The Wildcats used a 14-1 run to extend its lead before Stilwell added another kill to stop the streak. A kill by junior Jasamine Pettie put the Falcons at 10. The Falcons added a pair of assisted blocks and several kills behind strong serving from freshman Kelly Spencer, but Davidson went on to take the 30-15 victory.
The Wildcats struck first, but Air Force used a kill from senior Rebecca Gerton to take the lead in the second set. The two squads traded points, until Davidson gained a three-point lead at the 11-8 mark. Aces by Harrington allowed the Falcons to tie the set at 13 and take the lead on the ensuing point. The Falcons and Wildcats traded serves, going point for point with one another. Davidson took a two-point lead at the 27-25 mark for the largest advantage on either side of the net since the 13-11 mark, before going on to take the 30-27 game win.
Davidson collected the first six points of the third game and pulled out to an 11-1 lead before the Falcons called a timeout. Stewart earned the Falcons' first kill of the set. Harrington added her third ace of the match and Stilwell added back-to-back kills, as the Falcons continued to put points on the board before eventually falling by a 30-19 margin.
Freshman Caroline Kurtz led the Falcons with eight kills, while Katie Batchelder posted the team's top attacking percentage at .130. For the second straight match, senior setter Kim Kallabis tallied 13 assists, while freshman Jessica Hellmann added seven. Senior Rebecca Gerton tied for the match-lead with 14 digs, while Harrington's three aces and Stilwells' three blocks led the Falcons.
Air Force concludes action at the Runnin' Bulldog Invitational this afternoon (Sept. 8) with a match against North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m. (EST).
