Junior Class Dominates Final Round of Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Backed by a strong showing by the Class of 2009, the Air Force boxing team closed out the 2008 Friday Night Fights season on Jan. 18. In all, the Falcons took part in 14 hard-fought contests in the Upper Boxing Room of the Academy's Cadet Gym. Sophomore Bailey Ball picked up his second Boxer of the Week award this season, as several positions changed on the "Champions and Challengers" board.
Ball used a strong inside attack to improve to 4-1 in Friday action, as he defeated junior Sean May in a 152-pound contest. With quick hands and strong combinations, Ball was able to earn the judges' decision over May.
Members of the junior class picked up victories in the first five matches. Travis Murray got the night started, as he decisioned senior Clifford Moore in a 172-pound bout. Andrew Catoire earned a draw with classmate Justin Lee at 178 pounds, while Nathan Liptak took a 152-pound decision from sophomore Ken Kaczmarek to remain undefeated on Friday night (5-0). Boyce Loomis defeated senior Chris Johnson at 187 pounds and Rudy Bowen made his season debut, decisioning senior Ryan Price at 160 pounds.
Senior Daryn Nelson improved to 4-1 on Friday nights as he claimed a referee-stopped victory (first round) over sophomore John Doeseckle in a 160-pound bout.
The juniors took the next three contests, as Elon Brumfield decisioned senior Bruce Jamison at 179 pounds and Dean Chuva defeated freshman Matt Demars by decision at 117 pounds. Fellow junior Jesse Horton earned the judges' choice at 133 pounds to defeat classmate David Simon.
Sophomore Cory Tintzman defeated newcomer, senior Todd Newell, in a referee-stopped-contest at 215 pounds. Freshman Cameron Carter earned a 162-pound decision over classmate Martynas Smitas in the season debut for both boxers. Junior Casey Butikofer took a decision from freshman William Lindberg at 200 pounds, while senior Jacob Lambach closed out the night with a victory by decision over sophomore Matt Deming.
Nine members of the Falcons' squad will travel to Seattle, Wash., for a National Collegiate Boxing Association showdown at the Washington Athletic Club on Saturday, Jan. 26. Air Force will also compete against NCBA competition in Reno, Nev., on Saturday, Feb. 1, before returning to the Academy to begin the 50th Wing Open Tournament.
