Falcons Drop Pair of 4-3 Matches in Texas

Despite winning the doubles point in each match, the Air Force women's tennis team lost their first two matches of the 2008 spring season Friday in Lubbock, Texas, falling to both Texas State and Texas-Pan American by a 4-3 score.
In the morning match, the Falcons won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches, 9-7, to win the point. Juniors Christine Abayan and Meghan Kiser downed Ali Gulida and Sumarie Muller at No. 2, while sophomore Erlyn Rudico and freshman Samantha Sarkis beat Ashley Ellis and Mackenzie Farmer at No. 3.
Abayan and freshman Christen Monreal won singles matches for Air Force, but Texas State rallied to win the other four in straight sets to claim the team match. Abayan beat Ellis, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, while Monreal came from behind to defeat Jennifer Nowland, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
In the evening match, a similar story unfolded as the Falcons won two doubles matches, including a 9-7 win at No. 1 by seniors Lauren Wilson and Erika Shortridge over Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima.
Wilson also captured the No. 1 singles match, defeating Oliveira, 6-1, 6-3, while Sarkis won the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-1 over Stephanie Willerding. UTPA won the other four singles matches to clinch the match.
"We played great doubles today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Lauren Wilson had an outstanding performance against UTPA."
Air Force takes on nationally ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.
