The Air Force women's tennis team dropped its third straight match to start the 2008 spring season on Sunday, falling 6-1 to Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.
Texas Tech opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Samantha van der Drift and Kelsy Garland paired at No. 1 and jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage on AFA's Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson, but were pushed to an 11th game before winning 8-3. Maria Jose Andres and Simone Templeton teamed at No. 3 for the Red Raiders, clinching the doubles point over Air Force's Erlyn Rudico and Samantha Sarkis, 8-5.
The Red Raiders claimed five of the six singles matches. Janet Durham blanked AFA's Rudico, 6-0, 6-0, followed by Tech's No. 1 player van der Drift rolling over Air Force's Wilson, 6-2, 6-0. Garland debuted at No. 2, taking down AFA's Christine Abayan, 6-4, 6-1.
Shortly after, Kerryn Potgieter and Templeton sunk in points five and six for Tech over AFA's Christen Monreal and Sarkis, respectively. Air Force got on the board when freshman Sarah Cassman won the No. 6 match, defeating Kyla Coleman, 6-2, 6-4.
