The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the 45th-ranked team in the country, the University of Denver, Friday at the Academy. Air Force, which started three freshmen in the top six spots, dropped to 0-4 this season.
Freshman Sarah Cassman posted the lone victory for Air Force, winning the No. 6 singles match over DU's Kaja Smole, 7-5, 4-6, (10-4). Fellow freshman Katrina Eromin battled from a 5-1 deficit in the first set and saved five set points before falling, 7-6(5), 6-2, to Bhavani Tirumurti at the No. 5 spot.
DU took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The closest match was at the No. 2 spot, where Tirumurti and Ute Schnoy downed Falcon juniors Christine Abayan and Meghan Kiser, 8-6.
The Pioneers cruised through the top four singles matches in straight sets to claim the 6-1 team victory.
"Sarah Cassman did a great job of outlasting her opponent today and really stepped up her play when the match got close," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Our doubles play was a little disappointing today as we did not execute when we had some opportunities."
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host Washington State at 10 a.m.
