SEATTLE, Wash. - Backed by six impressive victories, the Air Force boxing team had a strong showing at the Washington Athletic Club's National Collegiate Boxing Association Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26, in Seattle, Wash. The Falcons claimed six victories in nine bouts against competition against Army, California, Nevada and Santa Clara.
Senior Daryn Nelson was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week for the third time this season, after taking a decision from Nevada's Francisco Torres in a 158-pound contest. Using a strong jab and good lateral movement, Nelson was able to score points with hard combinations and body shots.
Junior David Simon opened the night with a 135-pound decision over California's Matt Battaclan, while senior Brian Navin put the Falcons up 2-0 after decisioning Army's J.T. Taylor at 144 pounds. Nelson's victory at 158-pounds gave the Falcons the first three victories.
Nevada's Jacob Munson-Decker defeated senior Ryan Price in a 156-pound contest, but sophomore John Doeseckle got the Falcons back on track. Doeseckle defeated Army's Kevin Ramirez by decision in a 157-pound decision.
The Falcons split the final four matches, as Nevada's Ryan Cotey took a decision from senior Clifford Moore in a 162-pound bout, while classmate James Dunn topped Chris Haley of Santa Clara by decision at 168 pounds.
Nevada's Kenny Dryer-Redner decisioned senior Bruce Jamison in a 180-pound bout, while sophomore Cory TIntzman closed out the night with a heavyweight victory over Army's Cedrik Fraser.
