Rachel Miller Clears Career-Best Mark to Win NWU Invitational

LINCOLN. Neb. - Freshman Rachel Miller cleared a career-best 11'11¾" to win the pole vault at the Nebraska Wesleyan Open in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Jan. 26. Improving her personal-best by six inches, Miller continues to climb the Academy's all-time standings. In just her third collegiate meet, she is now ranked fourth in the program record book.
The non-team scoring meet, which immediately followed the Big 12-Mountain West Conference Challenge, featured athletes from the six "challenge" schools (Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, Kansas State, Missouri and Nebraska), as well as Nebraska Wesleyan and several unattached athletes.
Classmate Jessica Mapes was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 59.58, while the 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 4:00.69, which the 10th-fastest time in Academy history. Sophomore Danielle McCarty finished fourth in the triple jump after recording a distance of 36'6¾".
On the men's side, senior John Payne placed fourth in the 600-meter with a time of 1:27.19. Air Force claimed two top-five finishes in the 4x400-meter relays. One team clocked a time of 3:34.09 to take fourth, while another finished in 3:43.11 to take fifth. Senior Matt Gensic cleared 14'5¼" in the pole vault to take fifth. The Falcons return to the Academy on Feb. 1-2, as they host the annual Air Force Invitational.
