Falcons Wrap Up Opening Day at WAC Shootout

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Led by a first-place finish from senior captain Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.), the Air Force women's swimming and diving team put together a 1-2 dual record on the first day of the WAC Shootout, hosted by New Mexico State. In the seven-team event, the Falcons recorded dual scores against three teams, defeating Northern Colorado, 163-73, while falling to San Jose State, 154-88, and Nevada, 145-97.
Hwang was the lone event winner for Air Force, taking first place in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:55.63, nearly a full second in front of her closest competitor. Hwang added another top-10 finish, placing seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.62, while sophomore Kaeli Kluesner (Denver, Colo.) finished 10th in the same event with a mark of 2:13.12.
Air Force landed three swimmers in the top 10 in the 100 free, led by senior Laken Stogner (Bowdon, Ga.), who placed fourth with a time of 54.15. Freshman Alison Ceranski (Marinette, Wis.) placed sixth with a mark of 54.56, while Cassie Fletcher (Fr., Durham, N.C.) touched the wall in a time of 54.93 to take ninth place.
Ceranski and Stogner also finished in the top 10 in the 50 free, with Ceranski taking fifth with a mark of 24.53, while Stogner finished sixth in 24.61.
Another top 10 finish for the Air Force swimmers came from freshman Katharine Ernst (Folsom, Calif.), who placed seventh in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 59.57.
The top relay finish for the Falcons came in the 200 freestyle relay, as Stogner, Katelyn Hunter (Jr., La Crescent, Minn.), Esther Kim (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Ceranski combined for a time of 1:38.72, finishing fourth.
Leading the divers was freshman Lauren Shetley (St. Louis, Mo.), who took third place in the 1-meter event with a score of 223.30. Meanwhile, junior Chelsea Tompkins (Grand Junction, Colo.) was the top performer for the Falcons at 3-meters, placing 10th with a score of 211.75.
The Falcons conclude competition at the WAC Shootout tomorrow, as they face Boise State, Northern Arizona and host New Mexico State in dual scoring.
