DETROIT, Mich. - Senior Austin Almand and junior Bailey Ball earned victories as the Air Force boxing team concluded competition at the Service Academy Classic in Detroit, Mich., late Friday night (Oct. 24). The Falcons recorded a 2-4 record against their opponents from the other service academies.
Both of the Falcons' wins came against Army boxers. Almand earned a victorious decision over Stephanie Manuel in the 165-pound bout, while Ball's win in the 149-pound match came over Johnnie Garcia.
Four other Air Force boxers took part in the sold-out, black-tie affair at the Detroit Athletic Club. Seniors Harvey White and Dave Simon fell to boxers from Navy. White lost a 125-pound bout to Jesus Aguilera, while Simon dropped a 132-pound decision to Paul Hollwedel. Junior Alexander Shin fell to Army's Dan Hogan at 140 pounds.
Although senior Sean May lost a decision to Navy's Jorge Hernandez in a close 158-pound bout, he was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Showcasing a great jab and landing several hard rights, May utilized his height and reach advantage. Ultimately, the judges awarded Hernandez the split victory, but May's performance caused the coaching staff to award him with the weekly honor.
The Falcons continue action against its service academy foes next weekend (Friday, Oct. 31), as they travel to West Point, N.Y., for the annual showdown with Army.
