Vincent Miranda Earns Victory at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Vincent Miranda was the lone winner for the Air Force boxing team, as it wrapped up competition at defending national champion Army on Friday, Oct. 31, in West Point, N.Y. Miranda, taking a 165-pound decision from Derek Turner, was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Miranda was one of 12 Falcons to travel to the Army post for the yearly match-up between the two service academies. Taking on a taller opponent, Miranda boxed a smart bout. He used good counterpunches, before finding a hard right hand to defeat Turner.
Six of the Falcons' losses came by decision, while the other five came from referee or coach stopped bouts.
Junior Matt McPhail was decisioned by Joe Grohoski at 125 pounds, while Brosseau took a decision from sophomore Gavin Foley in the 142-pound bout. Senior Jon Andresen dropped a 175-pound decision to Scott Ginther, while sophomore Matt Tasin lost a 180-pound bout by decision to Seth King. Fellow sophomore William Lindberg (192 pounds) and senior Joshua Henderson-Casteel (heavyweight) also dropped decisions in the ring to Dan Briggs and Cedric Fraser, respectively.
Sophomore Michael Mizes' 135-pound bout with Jevon Thomas was stopped in the second round, while classmate Gabriel Valdeleon's bout with Ricky Garcia at 143 pounds was stopped in the third. Senior Richard Kenny's 195-pound contest with Jody Chapman was stopped in the first, while classmate Casey Butikofer's match in the same weight division was halted in the third. At the heavyweight division, sophomore Daniel Winningham's bout with Mike Njokuobi was stopped in the third.
Air Force returns to the Academy on Nov. 14, when it hosts another round of Friday Night Fights in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
