USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Despite a strong hitting performance from senior Jasamine Pettie, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a straight set match to New Mexico on Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Academy's Clune Arena. The Falcons fell in consecutive 25-12, 25-9 and 25-14 sets to the Lobos, who collected their 20th victory of the season (20-6) as Air Force fell to 5-21.
Pettie hit at a .357 clip, connecting on seven of 14 attempts, while committing just two errors. However, with only juniors Katie Batchelder and Michelle Harrington hitting in positive figures, the Falcons hit just .054 as a team. Harrington collected six kills and Batchelder added five, as the trio accounted for 18 of the team's 24 kills. Harrington also added a pair of assisted blocks to her stat line, while Batchelder claimed one.
Sophomore Jessica Hellmann led the Falcons with 16 assists and nine digs. Freshman Victoria Martinez as second on the team with eight digs, while classmate Jasmine Sapp stepped into the setter role and tallied four assists.
The two programs traded the first several points, before New Mexico doubled up Air Force, 10-5. A kill by sophomore Nichole Stilwell put the Falcons over the 10-point mark (19-10), but the Lobos took the 25-12 win. New Mexico started out strong in the second set, rolling out to an 18-3 advantage, and took the 25-9 game. The Lobos again took the early 13-4 lead in the final stanza. A Harrington kill put the Falcons over the 10-point mark, but UNM claimed the 25-14 victory.
Air Force closes out the home portion of the 2008 season on Saturday, Nov. 15, when it hosts TCU at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, the Falcons will recognize its three seniors - Pettie, Kristina Stewart and Tracee Curlett.
