Chris Wright scored two goals to lead the New Mexico men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Air Force Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos outshot the Falcons 20-11 and improved to 10-6-2 on the season and 6-3-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Falcons fell to 4-13-0 on the season and 2-7-0 in league play.
The Lobos went up 1-0 when Jack Smithson picked up a Justin Davis rebound for his fourth goal of the season. Davis was able to notch a goal of his own when he took a punt from goalkeeper Justin Fite and popped the ball up and over Air Force goalie Jim Gullo to put the Lobos up 2-0 at the half.
Wright made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute off a one-on-one situation with Gullo that Wright put far post for his fifth goal of the season. Air Force freshman Zach Brinlee notched his second goal of the season in the 71st minute to cut the lead to 3-1 after taking a pass from junior Kevin Rosser and beating Fite far post.
Wright scored the final goal of the game in the 79th minute after collecting a ball in the box and firing a shot past AFA sophomore Patrick Gould, who had replaced Gullo earlier in the half.
Gullo made six saves and Gould made one for Air Force, while Fite had four saves for the Lobos.
Air Force concludes its 2008 season on Sunday, Nov. 16 against UNLV in Las Vegas. The game begins at 1 p.m. (PT).
