Freshman Andrew Golz scored the first goal of his career Sunday, giving the Air Force men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UNLV in the season finale for both teams in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas. The Falcons finish their 2008 season with a 5-13 overall record and a 3-7 mark in the MPSF, while UNLV finished at 8-9-1 and 3-7 in the conference.
The first half saw the Rebels unleash seven shots at the Air Force goal, while the Falcons were held to just one shot, yet the half would end in a scoreless tie. The Falcons scored the game-winner just two minutes into the second half after earning a corner kick off a blocked Kevin Rosser shot. Rosser then took the corner kick, and sent a kick into the middle of the box that was headed in by Golz past UNLV goalie Hawk Mummey in the 48th minute.
UNLV did have its chances to tie up the score, as it took 13 shots in the second half, but kept sending their shots just wide of the goal. The Rebels' best chance came in the 62nd minute, when Lamar Neagle rose above the Air Force defenders to head a corner kick, but his attempt went just inches to the outside of the left post.
Air Force Junior Jim Gullo posted two saves for his third shutout of the season, while Mummey did not make a save, as Air Force's only shot on goal was the game-winner. UNLV held a 20-5 edge on shots for the afternoon, and 6-2 edge on corner kicks.
Junior Steve Noller led the Falcons with nine points this season on four goals and one assist. Rosser finished second with seven points, with one goal and a team-high five assists.
