Falcons Lose 1-0 at DU

Joey Mathot scored the game's only goal and Joe Willis made four saves in posting a shutout as the University of Denver men's soccer team shut out Air Force 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field. With the victory, DU improved to 9-5-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Falcons fell to 4-12 and 2-7 in league play.
In the 72nd minute, freshman Matt Kirby made a cross from the right side to Mathot on the left side of the box. Mathot fired the ball into the right corner of the net past Air Force goalkeeper Jim Gullo.
In the first half, Denver outshot Air Force 12-2, with a game total of 22-10. Sam Garza had game-highs of 10 total shots and four on goal, while Kyle Christensen added five total shots. Gullo made four of his six saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Air Force came out strong in the second half, placing three shots on goal. The Falcons had just four shots on goal in the game, one each by four different players.
Air Force plays its final two games of the season next weekend on the road at New Mexico on Nov. 14 and UNLV on Nov. 16.
