College Park, Md. - Held scoreless for nearly 43 minutes, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Maryland, 16-4, Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Falcons drop to 1-4 on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 5-2.
Junior Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) put Air Force on the board first with a goal less than four minutes into the contest. Maryland responded with three scores of their own to go up by two, but a pair of goals from Nevitt and Tristan Newkirk (Fr., Albany, N.Y.) in the final minute of the opening period tied the game at 3-3. However, the Terps recorded another goal with just 15 seconds in the quarter to go up 4-3.
Maryland shut out Air Force in the next two periods, leading 7-3 at the half and 14-3 after three quarters. The Terps' lead grew to 16-3 in the final period before Falcons' sophomore Ridge Flick (Plano, Texas), assisted by Vinny Sandtorv (Fr., Centereach, N.Y.), scored with 1:19 remaining to bring the final score to 16-4.
Nevitt's two goals led the Falcons, who were outshot 52-31 in the contest. Meanwhile, Maryland had 12 different goal scorers, led by four players with two scores each. Air Force's goalkeepers combined for 18 saves, including 16 from starter Woody Johnson (Fr., Davidsonville, Md.), while the Terps tallied 13 saves.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, March 22, when it hosts eighth-ranked Notre Dame in the GWLL opener for both teams. The game is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Cadet Lacrosse Stadium.
