Denver, Colo. - Outscored 6-1 in the third period, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 contest to Penn Saturday morning in the first game of the annual Pioneer Face-off Classic, being held at Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the campus of the University of Denver. The Falcons fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Quakers improve to 2-1.
Penn took an early 2-0 lead in the game before a pair of goals by Air Force sophomore Ridge Flick (Plano, Texas), the first of his career, tied the contest with 4:37 remaining in the opening period. Meanwhile, a man-up goal by freshman Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.), assisted by K.J. Landgraf (Jr., Cordova, Md.), gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead after one period.
The two teams traded goals throughout the second quarter before an unassisted goal from junior Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) with just two seconds remaining in the half gave the Falcons a 7-5 advantage going into intermission.
However, Air Force's lead was short-lived, as Penn rattled off five straight goals to start the period, taking a 10-7 lead before Nevitt scored his third goal of the game to cut the deficit back to two. A man-up goal to end the quarter and an even-strength score to begin the fourth period put the Quakers up 12-8. The Falcons never got closer than three goals the rest of the way, as a man-up goal from senior Kevin Crumrine (Edgewater, Md.) in the final minute of regulation accounted for the final 13-10 score.
While the Falcons were 4-of-7 on extra-man opportunities, Air Force won just eight of 25 face-off attempts. Freshman goalkeepers Brian Wilson (Summit, N.J.) and Woody Johnson (Davidsonville, Md.) combined for 12 saves on the afternoon, while Chris Casey picked up 11 saves in goal for the Quakers.
Flick and Nevitt each finished with three goals to lead the Air Force offense, while Crumrine added two. Jack Parchman (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) notched a goal and an assist, Sandtorv scored one goal and Landgraf and David Rose (Sr., Allentown, Pa.) added goals for the Falcons.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow, March 9, when they face Brown on the final day of the Pioneer Face-off Classic. The game is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
