Falcons Split Pair of Matches Sunday

The Air Force women's tennis team split a pair of matches Sunday to wrap up its four-match road trip. The Falcons opened the day with a tough, 4-3 loss to Idaho, then defeated Lewis & Clark State College, 6-1, to wrap up the day. Air Force is now 2-3 this season.
The Falcons nearly rallied from a 3-0 deficit against Idaho, but came up just short. After losing the doubles point and the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches, sophomores Christen Monreal (No. 3) and Katrina Eromin (No. 6) and freshman Tahlia Smoke (No. 4) won in straight sets. Sophomore Sarah Cassman could not convert at the No. 5 spot, however, and dropped the deciding match, 6-4, 6-2, to Basia Maciocha.
Air Force rebounded nicely to win eight of nine matches, including all three doubles matches, against Lewis & Clark State. Air Force captured all its singles victories in straight sets, including a 6-3, 6-3 win by Amoke at the No. 4 spot over Rilee Moorhead, giving her a perfect 4-0 mark in singles for the weekend. Fellow freshman Allie Chermel posted her first victory of the spring season, a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Shefat Baishakhi at the No. 2 spot.
"The match against Idaho was a barn burner," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "All three doubles we fought back and had a chance to win but could not convert. I was very pleased with our effort on the court. It was nice to see Allie (Chermel) get her first win of the season and Tahlia (Smoke) played great the entire weekend, including a win against nationally ranked Washington State."
The Falcons are idle until Friday, Feb. 6, when they host Denver at 4 p.m.
