The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to in-state rival and 40th ranked University of Denver Friday afternoon at the Academy. DU won two of the three doubles matches, then swept the six singles matches to improve to 2-3 this season, while the Falcons fell to 2-4.
Air Force's No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Christen Monreal and freshman Allie Chermel posted the Falcons' lone victory on the day. They defeated Bhavani Tirumurti and Annette Aksdal, 8-6. DU's No. 1 team of Mallory Voelker and Julia Bauregger defeated AFA junior Erlyn Rudico and sophomore Samantha Sarkis, 8-1, while Kyla Iwinski and Ute Schnoy won the No. 2 match, 8-5, over senior Christine Abayan and sophomore Sarah Cassman to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, DU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, including Voelker winning the No. 1 match, 6-0, 6-1, over Abayan. The No. 4 match was stretched to three sets before Bauregger downed Cassman, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
"Our doubles was some of the best we have played all year long," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "It was great to see Allie and Christen pull out a win. Even though we seemed to have some momentum going into the singles, Denver stepped it up to another level after the doubles."
The Falcons host two matches on Saturday, against Texas Tech at 10 a.m. and Colorado College at 3 p.m.
