Air Force Picks Up Four Victories at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Highlighted by four individual victories, the Air Force boxing team opened the 2009-10 season at Navy on Friday, Oct. 2, at Macdonough Hall in Annapolis, Md. In their first competition of the year, the Falcons posted a 4-7 overall record against their service academy foe.
Senior Cory Tintzman, the team's captain, picked up the Falcons' first victory, defeating Nathan Gester in a heavyweight competition. Classmate Nathan Liptak also notched a victory, as he picked up a decision over Fabian Pleasant in a 156-pound bout. Junior Joseph Silvio earned the team's Boxer of the Week distinction, after claiming a 165-pound decision over Chris O'Brian. Fellow junior Dalton Hall rounded out the Air Force winners, decisioning Angelo Renelo at 175 pounds.
In the first, and lightest, bout of the night, sophomore Rainer Caparas dropped a close decision to Logan Hershman at 125 pounds. Sophomore Daniel Starr lost a 139-pound decision to Tristan Setezer at 139 pounds, while senior Bailey Ball dropped a decision to Paul Hollwedel at 147 pounds.
Junior Vincent Miranda lost to Jake Denario at 165 pounds, when Air Force had coach Eddie Weichers halted the bout in the third round. Sophomore Logan Brandt was defeated by decision to Josh Fernandez in a 165-pound bout, while classmate casey Habluetzel lost a referee-stopped-contest (first round) to Chris Bertucci at 165 pounds. In the final bout of the night, newcomer Brett Satterfield faced a decisional loss to Cortez McGrae in another heavyweight bout.
Air Force hosts is first round of Friday Nights Fights on Oct. 9 at the Cadet Gym Boxing Room, before facing Navy and fellow service academy foe Army in Detroit, Mich., at the Service Academy Classic on Oct. 23.
