Behind two goals from sophomore Garrett Getschow and the first career shutout by freshman goalie Mike Mauro, the Air Force men's soccer team posted a 4-0 victory Friday over Howard University in the first round of the Houston Baptist Classic in Houston, Texas. With the victory, the Falcons improved to 4-3-1, while the Bison fell to 2-7.
Getschow, playing in just his second game of the season, scored the first goal of his career in the 63rd minute to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. He took a pass from freshman Eric Tise and placed a shot from the left side of the box past Howard goalkeeper Victor Thomas. It was the first point of Tise's career.
Air Force junior Kyle Moses opened the scoring in the 19th minute with his first goal of the season after taking a nice crossing pass from sophomore Ben Chavez. Freshman Kevin Durr then made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute with his first career tally by chipping a shot by Thomas after taking a pass from freshman Zane Dydasco.
Getschow closed out the scoring in the 85th minute after freshman Cody Felipe sent a cross into the box that Getschow collected and blasted past Thomas, who made four saves for the Bison. Felipe also notched the first point of his career on the play.
Mauro was relatively untested Friday as he had to make just two saves in just his second career start. The Falcons outshot Howard 12-5 and the four goals are the most scored by Air Force in one game since a 4-0 win over San Diego State on Nov. 7, 2004.
Air Force takes on the host team, Houston Baptist, on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. (CT). HBU dropped a 2-0 decision to San Jose State on Friday in the other first-round game.
