New Faces Highlight Falcons' Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - With a card that featured 12 first-time contenders, the Air Force boxing team concluded another successful round of Friday Night Fights on Oct. 30 at the Academy. Although the first four bouts showcased some of the Falcons' veteran boxers, five of the final six bouts included newcomers in both corners.
Sophomore casey Habluetzel picked up his first victory of the season, as he edged classmate Nick Cataldo for a split decision victory in the 172-pound weight class. Senior Nathan Liptak was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week after earning the unanimous decision of the judges in a 160-pound bout with junior Joe Silvio.
Junior Mike Chambers was the night's heavyweight champion, as he bloodied classmate, and first-time FNF participant, Matt Coates for a unanimous decision. Another junior claimed a unanimous decision, as Vincent Miranda evened his seasonal record with a victory over senior newcomer Axel Favreul.
The next five match-ups featured two newcomers to the Friday night ring.
Sophomore Craig Spranger used a strong punch advantage in the final round to earn a unanimous decision over freshman David Jorgenson in the 150-pound bout. Freshman Erik Voron claimed all of the judges votes in a 147-pound contest with sophomore Jacob Krasnov, while sophomore Evan Twohig earned a split decision victory over freshman squadmate Elliot Unseth in the 168-pound bout.
Sophomore Spencer Baucke and junior Will Keuchler each picked up their first collegiate victories by was of a referee-stopped-contest. Baucke defeated freshman Clayton Elliott in the third round of a 178-pound bout, while Keuchler stopped sophomore Dartanian Warr during the second round of a fast-throwing 172-pound bout. In the night's final bout, sophomore John Lydiard improved to 2-0 on the year, as he earned a unanimous victory over freshman Jake Alleman in a 169-pound match.
Air Force returns to the ring on Friday, Nov. 6, when it hosts defending national champion Army in the annual service academy showdown. Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
