Falcons Impressive at Lobo Balloon Fiesta Classic

Four Air Force singles players and two doubles advanced to the quarterfinals Friday at the Lobo Balloon Fiesta Men's Tennis Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Two more singles and doubles rounds will be played on Saturday.
Sophomore Cody Hall, the No. 3 seed in the top singles flight, received a bye in the first round, then defeated David Flodberg of Northern Arizona, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 in the second round to reach the quarters. Freshman Lance Wilhelm fell just short of the quarters after losing to the sixth-seed Ben Dunbar of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the second round of the "A" flight.
Three Falcons will play in the quarterfinals of the "B" flight on Saturday. Senior James Tomlin had to win just one match after receiving a first-round bye and defeated Western New Mexico's Devin Stroman, 6-1, 6-3. Freshmen Stephen Katrein and Vinni Lodolo each won two matches on Friday. Katrein defeated Juan Vicencio of New Mexico Military Institute, 6-1, 6-1 and Robert Edwards of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-4, while Lodolo beat Conor Buchanan of UNC, 7-5, 6-1 and Camilo Almeida of Western New Mexico, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Hall and Wilhelm won a pair of matches to reach the quarterfinals. The duo defeated Joe Garcia and Nico Shell of Glendale Community College, 8-0, in the first round, then beat Roman Fulgenzi of New Mexico Military Institute and Matt Neeld of New Mexico, 8-6. Lodolo and fellow freshman Sam Barnes also won two matches, defeating Juan Pesce and Chris Vlad of Glendale Community College, 8-2, and Armando Morales and Luke Salazar of New Mexico State, 8-5.
