USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force track and field program will be represented at the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's annual convention next week in Orlando, Fla., as associate head coach Scott Irving has been chosen as a featured speaker on the javelin throw.
Irving is in his 11th season as the Falcons' throws coach and his second as the program's associate head coach. In addition to coaching former standout Dana Pounds to a pair of NCAA championships in the javelin, he also coached her to the USATF national title in 2007. Under Irving's guidance, Pounds, the first Air Force athlete to win back-to-back NCAA titles, became a member of Team USA and competed at the Pan-American Games and World Championships, while finishing second at the 2008 Olympic Trials.
Over his career, which has spanned more than 20 years, Irving has coached nine national champions in the javelin, as well as numerous conference champions and NCAA All-Americans. Irving, the 2009 USTFCCCA Mountain Region Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year, has coached a Mountain West Conference javelin champion in seven of the last 10 years. In addition, records by Irving-coached javelin throwers still stand in all five major Division I programs that he has coached (ACC, Big Ten, SEC, PAC-10 and Mountain West).
He is one of three throwing specialists to speak during Monday's symposium. Irving will be joined by John Godina, a two-time Olympic medalist in the shot put and owner of The John Godina World Throws Center, and Jerry Clayton, the throwing coach at Auburn University. Clayton, whose son Nick is a freshman thrower for Air Force, has coached 14 NCAA champions in seven different field events.
Irving will conclude the first day of speakers with a presentation at 7 p.m. (EST). The coaches' convention runs Dec. 14-17 in Orlando, Fla.
