JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In its first game of the season, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Maryland, 15-4, Saturday afternoon at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida. The game was part of the "Face Off for a Cause," with proceeds going to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
Maryland (2-0) opened up the scoring just over two minutes into the first period with a goal from Brian Farrell. After getting several opportunities, the Falcons (0-1) managed to tie up the score four minutes later with an unassisted goal by senior Eric Evans (Ellicott City, Md.). However, the Terps scored a man-down goal at the 2:16 mark in the opening quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.
The Terrapins struck quickly in the second period, scoring off the opening face-off, and increased their lead to 5-1 midway through the quarter. Air Force got back on the board as a face-off win for the Falcons led to a goal from senior Wick Kelley (Culver, Ind.), the first of his career. Still, Maryland registered the next two goals to take a 7-2 advantage at the half.
Outscoring Air Force 5-0 in the third period, Maryland took a 12-2 advantage into the final stanza, and was up 13-2 before K.J. Landgraf (Sr., Cordova, Md.) tallied his first goal with an assist from junior Ridge Flick (Plano, Texas). Still, the Terrapins were not done, scoring two more before Evans registered the last goal with 1:45 remaining in the contest.
Air Force was outshot 47-36 for the game and won just 7-of-23 face-offs. However, the Falcons recorded 16 saves in the contest, with Woody Johnson (So., Davidsonville, Md.) finishing with 11 saves after entering the game at the half.
The Falcons wrap up competition at the "Face Off for a Cause" tomorrow, as they take on Presbyterian. The game, which will be held at Ponte Vedra High School, is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
