USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team picked up a pair of victories this past weekend, as sophomore Matthew DeMars and senior Jesse Horton traveled to Reno, Nev., for a competition against foes from the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA).
In the 115-pound bout, DeMars faced a scrappy Joe Grohowski from Army. Using a good jab and sharp combinations, DeMars was able to keep an aggressive Grohowski outside. Using good lateral movement, the sophomore scored often and was able to secure the judges' decision. DeMars improves to 4-0 in bouts against NCBA opponents.
In his first road competition since returning from a semester-long exchange program to Japan, Horton faced off against Ian Fletcher, a southpaw from Santa Clara. The pair had met in last year's regional, where Horton defeated Fletcher in a referee-stopped-contest. Horton used good combinations and countered Fletcher in the second and third rounds to win the decision.
Despite the fact that the Wing Open is just days away, the Falcons added this trip to Reno to get ring work for the two boxers in a hostile environment. DeMars is uncontested in the 112-pound weight class and Horton spent the fall semester in Japan as a part of the Academy's exchange program.
Air Force begins the 2009 Wing Open Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 18, with five quarterfinal bouts.
