USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Five hard-hitting bouts signaled the start of the 2009 Wing Open Tournament for the Air Force boxing team on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Spots in four different weight classes were determined, as the boxers vied for a spot in next week's semifinal round. Freshman Casey Habluetzel was named the program's Boxer of the Week.
In the third bout of the afternoon, Habluetzel took a 165-pound decision from sophomore Dalton Hall. In a classic "lefty-versus-righty" matchup, Habluetzel used good movement and hard punches to counter Hall's effort.
Habluetzel's bout was one of two contests in the 165-pound division. Freshman Nick Cataldo decisioned freshman Luke Dugger in the other match in that weight class.
Freshman Daniel Starr defeated sophomore Trever Symalla in the 139-pound bout, while the final two bouts were stopped early by the referee. Senior Rudy Bowen won his 156-pound match over sophomore Ryan Wilkinson when the referee stopped the bout in the third round. Fellow senior Jon Andresen advanced to the 175-pound semifinal after taking a third-round victory over classmate Thomas Meyer.
The five victors from tonight's bouts will join 21 other hopefuls in the semifinal round of Wing Open Tournament action. Action continues next Wednesday (Feb. 25) at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
